Just deciding I didn't want to drink anymore didn't work, and I was super frustrated.
There's just ONE thing left standing in the way of you totally smashing your goals. It's the alcohol. I get it.
My life wasn't bad by any means. I was happy(ish). I mean, on the outside, what did I even have to be unhappy about?!?
I have a great family
I grew a successful business
I exercised regularly
But I LOVED wine, and secretly hated myself for it.
It was undoing my fitness goals. Not just the empty calories, but also the low energy and bad self-image.
I would punish myself with hard workouts while my inner critic would say "you HAVE to push through this to make up for the damage you did to your body with that extra glass last night."
Then I'd reward myself for my hard work with wine.
It was undoing my business efforts. Sure, my business was growing at a slow and steady rate. But I knew I was meant for MORE than just slow and steady. I started my business because I wanted freedom. Instead, I found myself held captive by this wine loop. I would write lists and lists of creative ways I could help more people or scale my business. Then I'd have wine instead of taking action on my ideas because I was too tired from poor sleep or too busy heading to the next happy hour.
It was undoing my time with friends and family. I'd silence myself from starting vulnerable conversations with the people who love me. "Nope, might be the wine talking, better just keep that vulnerable nugget to myself so I don't regret saying it later." Or I'd organize and accept all kinds of social and business invitations. Once there, I'd pour my first glass to drown my imposter syndrome. Then, I'd spend all my time paying attention to how close to empty my glass was getting instead of actually getting to know the other people there in an authentic way.
then i discovered a secret
As a certified Brainspotting Practitioner, I was using brainspotting in my counseling business and seeing some amazing results for my clients.
Then, one day, I decided to apply it to the some of the information I'd been learning about alcohol and it's role in my life.
It became easy to say "no thanks," to booze and mean it. I didn't actually want to drink anymore. That desire I'd been white-knuckling my way through off and on for years was just gone.
~Workouts feel productive (and actually like self-care instead of punishment).
~My businesses are growing in size and profit at rates that are helping me live the life I desired when I opened them in the first place.
~I have meaningful conversations with the people who love me, and I'm experiencing how rewarding it is to be authentically connected with others.
Most importantly, I don't feel deprived. If I want a drink, I'll let myself have one. Truth is, since I applied brainspotting to my relationship with alcohol, I simply haven't wanted one.
Now I'm on a mission to help others like me.
